The 7th All Africa Kyokushin Karate Tournament was held at the UCT Sports complex in Cape Town over the weekend, showcasing some of the Full Contact talent we have in Africa and South Africa.
The biennial event sponsored by Dulux Maitland and Blue Gheko and supported by The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport saw several fighters compete over two days to eventually end with the top thirty-two fighters on the final day.
In addition to crowing the champion, the event acts a selection tournament for the quadrennial world tournament, which is held in Tokyo ( Japan ). The tournament format sees the fighters compete in grand Prix format, which eliminates fighters after just one loss, and the final winner having completed 6 fights. Due to the full contact nature of the event, with no protection and no weight or age categories, the fighters require supreme conditioning.
The 7th All Africa trophy eventually ended in the hands of South African and Eastern Cape fighter Gcobani Maxama, with second place going to local fighter and former All Africa Champion Xolani Gumede and third Zamami Lubanyama
